Tax tips if you receive a letter from the IRS. Click here to download
Very Important!
Taxpayers: In the event you receive a Tax Inquiry from the IRS or a Tax Audit Letter, please DO NOT ignore the First Letter. Usually the initial letter from the IRS simply means that they would like you to send in verification to substantiate a particular inquiry. If you ignore the 1st letter, you will receive a second more stronger letter (Notice CP-2000), asking specifically for proof of the EITC Credit or Schedule C Income and Expenses. (In layment's terms, the IRS simply is requesting that you prove the dependents your are claiming, and/or the expenses your are claiming on your Schedule C Profit and Loss Form. If you ignore them, it is assumed that you have no proof, and they will ask for the refund provided to you back.)
Send the documents requested in immediately at the fax number or address on the Initial Inquiry Letter. Be sure to write your Social Security Number on each page. Then call the IRS at the number listed on the letter to follow up and make sure it has been received.
UBU offers Tax Protection Plus for its clients in the event of an audit for $64.95. In the event of an audit, you just need to call the number that appears on your Tax Return, they will open a Case Number and assist you with the Audit.
Identity Verification - If after filing your Tax Return, you receive a letter requesting verification of your identity, call the number of the letter immediately. Have a copy of your current tax return and the prior year tax return handy to answer any questions the IRS might ask to verify your identity. As long as you answer the identity questions correctly, the IRS Agent will clear you and continue processing your Return promptly. They will inform you that your refund will be released within nine (9) weeks, but most times it usually within two (2) weeks.
Tax Resolution – In the event of an Audit, UBU Professionals will be available to answer questions to direct you. However, if you desire that we handle the Audit for you, and spend over one hour, there will be a Tax Resoution cost according to your individual needs.
Record Keeping – I cannot impress upon you how important it is for all clients to keep records and provide copies to your Tax Preparer. Be prepared to bring in bank statements for the last 12 months for our Tax Compliance file if you are filing a Schedule C for Business, to verify income and expenses filed. This is for your protection, as well as your Preparer in the event of an Audit.
Identity Theft 6-Digit PIN - After a Taxpayer has been identified as having an Identity Theft issue, the IRS will sometimes require a 6-digit PIN for their current-year and subsequent year tax returns for a few years after the issue has been resolved for the Taxpayer's protection. In this instance, the IRS will mail out a 6-digit PIN to be given to your designated Tax Preparer a few months prior to Tax Season. Please do not lose this 6 digit pin. If you do, please understand that this will delay the processing of your Tax Return and your refund, as the IRS will not accept the Tax Return without the 6 digit Pin. You will have to wait months for your Refund instead of the usual 7-21 Days.
If you decide to mail in the Tax Return in lieu of having your Tax Preparer Electronically File your Return, it will take months for your Refund to reach you. So please, be diligent in receiving and providing your 6-Digit Identity Theft PIN to your Tax Preparer.
